Biography
EK Nyame ranks among the Ghanaian musicians most frequently cited by fellow artists. He ranked among the central architects of the guitar highlife style, a tradition that merged with the palmwine approach and additional strands. During the postwar era he modernized the guitar highlife ensemble through the incorporation of jazz components together with Latin percussion. At the same time he shifted vocal performance into Twi, departing from the prevailing practice of using either English, Ghana’s official state language, or local Pidgin. Beyond these musical changes, Nyame expanded his original trio into a complete entertainment company that inserted theatrical pieces between musical segments and generated an escalating party mood by the close of each event. As late as 1994, however, no recordings by Nyame had appeared beyond Ghana’s borders.
