Biography
Ekkehard Ehlers, known for his digital reworkings of pre-existing tracks, put out his first album Betrieb during 2000. On it, he subjects audio excerpts by early twentieth-century figures like Arnold Schoenberg and Charles Ives to radical alterations, treating every composition as a self-contained framework open to sonic trials. Across a set of three short-form releases, Ehlers channels the essence of historical creative figures into electronic formats. Ekkehard Ehlers Plays Robert Johnson launched this sequence, after which came Ekkehard Ehlers Plays Albert Ayler, featuring his transformations of cello-based works. Ekkehard Ehlers Plays John Cassavetes brought the series to completion. He joined Stephan Mathieu for the album Heroin. Further output appeared under the Auch pseudonym, through the Autopoesies partnership, and via the März ensemble.
