Originating in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, El Jefe y Su Grupo functioned as a vocal ensemble anchored by electric guitar and organ. Boleros, rancheras, cumbias, and doo wop rock fused without seams in their performances, all carried by impeccable four-part harmony. The ensemble formed in early 1974 and produced a dozen studio albums, yet earned its strongest recognition through twenty singles that appeared on border radio playlists across Northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Those singles included covers of "Dimelo di Frente," "La Tumba Sera el Final," "Libro de Recuerdos," and "Nobleza." EMI, Luna Music Corporation, and Caiman Distribution ranked among the assorted labels that issued their recordings. After the original lineup disbanded in 2000, compilation releases have come to outnumber the group's original albums. A later incarnation of the act continues performing under the name El Nuevo Jefe y Su Grupo.
