El Pastel de Papas took shape as an Argentine experimental rock project launched by keyboardist Diego Lenger and guitarist Martin Telechanski. The two musicians had previously performed together in Proporción, Aurea y Trama, a band that originated after they first met at Buenos Aires' National School. Bassist Andrés Goldszmidt entered the lineup in 1990. One year afterward, Ezequiel Finger assumed the drum chair. El Pastel de Papas addressed social issues in its lyrics, delivering them with a consistently ironic tone. The ensemble's final live appearance occurred in October 1995. Even so, the group resurfaced to promote its 1999 compilation release Diecisiete Grandes Exitos.
