Guitar-driven quartet El Shirota draws from the melodic craft of 1990s alternative rock while channeling the dense, loud aesthetics of shoegaze, creating tracks that shift abruptly between ethereal layers and abrasive intensity. Seven years passed between the group’s formation and the arrival of their first album, during which they issued only a handful of unpolished EPs.

The four musicians—Alonso Salamanca, Jose Ignacio Gómez, Mauricio Avendaño, and David Yaneli—came together as friends in a Mexico City suburb in 2013. That same year they recorded and independently issued the four-track Chiluca No Es Satélite EP, a set of raw, punk-leaning demos. Subsequent releases arrived at a measured pace while membership fluctuated repeatedly. A self-titled 12-inch EP appeared in 2016, its sound more polished and positioned between post-punk and shoegaze; a second self-titled EP in the same style followed in 2018. When the band finally delivered its debut full-length, Tiempos Raros, in 2020, the lineup had shifted once more and the material reflected a stronger debt to 1990s alternative rock acts such as Weezer and Sonic Youth.
