The London, England-based group originated when music journalist Tom Doyle teamed up with Anth Brown, an engineer previously employed by On U Sound. The Scottish-born pair had started out under the name Electric Music, yet they were compelled to append AKA after former Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos issued a legal threat. Their first album appeared in 2000, bearing the expansive title North London Spiritualist Church. That release merged retro electronica, indie guitar rock, and Doyle’s wistful vocals in a style that recalled the methods of fellow UK eccentrics the Beta Band. Once the ZubiZaretta/Grand Royal partnership unexpectedly dissolved, the duo issued their next album through Sanctuary Records. The Resurrection Show carried a memorable cover photograph showing Doyle and Brown positioned inside the Great Hall of London’s Alexandra Palace. Inside, however, the songs did not quite recapture the organic warmth of the debut, even as ‘Something Up With The Stars’ and ‘Some Bright Shining Future’ emerged as the strongest cuts.
