Formed in 1985 in Liverpool, England, this unconventional grindcore group specialized in rudimentary studio methods. They released several albums first through Peaceville and subsequently Necrosis, each dominated by a heavily distorted, bass-heavy onslaught topped by visceral vocals delivered without polish or unity. The original roster consisted of Simon on drums, Bruno on bass, Andy on guitar, and Jeff Walker handling vocals. Following a split single with Generic, both Jeff and Bruno departed, the former later becoming a member of Carcass. Dom took over on bass, after which the remaining trio shared vocal responsibilities. The band channeled its chaotic extremity into critiques of the entire music business. Radio 1 presenter John Peel supported that stance by inviting them to record a nine-song session in July 1987. Tracks including “Starve The City (To Feed The Poor)” and “Mega-Armageddon Death Part 3” encapsulated both the group’s strengths and its constraints. The Electro Hippies disbanded in 1989.
