Biography
New Haven Electronhic characterize their approach as "Free Music leaning towards jazz...driven by Chapman Stick and Drums, with noise, electronics, saxophones, whistles and guitars." Emerging from the New Haven Improvisers Collective—an organization in which the group continues to play a central role—this stylistically elusive yet engaging unit formed in 2014 around the guiding principle "...to keep still and leave space." The musicians allowed their material to surface from silence, letting it locate its own pulse rather than imposing one, before gradually introducing motion through rhythmic patterns and lively contrapuntal lines while preserving ample breathing room. The lineup comprises Brett Bottomley on Chapman Stick, Jeff Cedrone handling guitar, keyboards, and electronics, Bob Gorry on guitar, electronics, and Theremin, Paul McGuire performing on saxophones and Great Bass Recorder, and Peter Riccio at drums and percussion. That same year the ensemble released its self-titled debut on the Collective’s in-house imprint. Following two years of regional rehearsals and performances that further refined the collective language, the musicians returned in 2016 with Reaching Out. Gorry produced the sessions, which documented the evolving realization of the band’s original aims. Press accounts characterized the resulting sound as adventurous, exploratory, and accessible.
