Biography
Anonymous project Eleh builds immersive, minimalist drones chiefly through analog and modular synthesizers, foregrounding low-frequency oscillation alongside resonant acoustic phenomena. Although the artist’s identity remains undisclosed, Eleh has appeared in live settings and maintains close ties to the Massachusetts independent label Important Records, responsible for issuing numerous recordings since 2006. Additional titles have surfaced on Touch, Taiga, and Line. Eleh has also partnered with another anonymous artist under the name Deceh, joined forces with Duane Pitre as Pitreleh, and issued split LPs alongside Pauline Oliveros, Ellen Fullman, Christina Kubisch, and further contributors. Later works such as the 2019 album Living Space introduce piano, bass, and chimes without abandoning the project’s minimal aesthetic.
Eleh originated in 1999, with its debut release, Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis I, emerging on Important Records in 2006. That album employed analog synthesizers, tube oscillators, and guitars while integrating tones beneath the threshold of human hearing. Two further volumes appeared, and in 2008 Eleh issued split LPs with Pauline Oliveros and Sun Circle together with Homage to the Square Wave, the first Taiga Records outing. Homage to the Sine Wave arrived in 2009; meanwhile Important continued to release material including the exploratory Retreat and Return, two volumes of Meditations & Improvisations, and a split LP with Nana April Jun. The self-titled Deceh debut also surfaced that year.
Location Momentum, Eleh’s initial Touch release, reached audiences in 2010 along with Repose, Radiant Intervals, and a split with Ellen Fullman. Three Deceh titles plus a triple-CD compilation of the Floating Frequencies trilogy followed in 2011. During 2012 Eleh presented Retreat Return Repose, another triple-CD reissue, Homage to the Pointed Waveforms, The Weight of Accumulation, and a split LP with Duane Pitre. The pair also issued a 2013 full-length under the Pitreleh name. Additional 2013 output encompassed a split LP by Deceh and Total Life, a Taiga vinyl box set collecting the three Homage albums, and For Moussavi Atrium, composed for a Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art performance. Two limited editions, Polarizer and the one-sided LP Circle Three: Full Moon at 35hz, appeared in 2014. Polarizer 2, a CD version of Homage, and a split with Tara Jane O’Neil arrived in 2015.
In 2017 Eleh issued two LINELEH collaborations with Richard Chartier, a split LP with Christina Kubisch, and the full-length Home Age. Bestie Infinite/Wear Patterns, a split with Caterina Barbieri, surfaced in 2018. Home Age 2, Living Space—Eleh’s second Touch full-length—and the cassette Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis IV all appeared in 2019. A vinyl edition of Living Space, a split album with NYZ, and the Harry Bertoia-inspired Harmonic Twins followed in 2020.
