Mark Egan on bass and Danny Gottlieb on drums share a friendship that originated during their student years at the University of Miami in the early 1970s and extended through their tenures alongside Pat Metheny, with Egan serving in the guitarist’s ensemble from 1978 to 1980 and Gottlieb continuing until 1983. The duo launched Elements in 1982, a project that incorporated Bill Evans on soprano and tenor saxophones plus keyboardist Clifford Carter from the beginning, while later guests encompassed guitarist Steve Khan, keyboardist Gil Goldstein, multiple percussionists, saxophonist David Mann, and additional musicians. Their output, released on the Philo, Antilles, Hip Pocket, Novus, GRP, Bluemoon, and Wavetone imprints, presents a serene and reflective strain of fusion marked by understated invention.
