The Australian ensemble Eleven of Hearts originated in 1993. Its core comprises flutist and pianist Dee Rogers, vocalist Christene Carol, and Macdonald Hamilton, whose instrumental range extends from electric guitar and keyboards to balalaika and banjo. Distinct contributions from each member enrich the trio. Rogers, recognized as a gifted and prolific composer, creates the material Eleven of Hearts commits to tape. Carol had journeyed abroad prior to her arrival in the group and had already secured a respected standing in opera. Hamilton accumulated extensive performance experience across numerous instruments while also developing expertise in production, engineering, and arranging.

The wistful debut album Secret Dreams appeared in 1997 on the ZOMBA label of BSC Music. Later that year the band completed its second album, One Love. Both early releases overflow with fairytale imagery and melodic tracks such as "The Summer Sea," "The Siren Calls," "Knight of Love," "The Dragon Sleeps," and "A Breath Away." On the sophomore recording Eleven of Hearts recruited additional performers, including a vocalist, pianist, and violinist. ~ Charlotte Dillon
