Originally formed in Sweden as the metal band Embraced, the group consisted of guitarist Peter Mårdklint, vocalist Kalle Johansson, and bassist Michael Håkansson. Beginning in thrash, the musicians gradually embraced a melodic approach shaped by thrash, death, and their shared affinity for classical music. Drummer Daniel Lindberg entered in 1995, the same year keyboardist Sven Karlsson arrived. Karlsson’s arrival enabled substantial sonic growth through the addition of synthesized flutes, strings, and choir textures. The 1997 demo Journey Into Melancholy earned Embraced a contract with the Swedish metal label Regain. The band toured Sweden, Finland, and Germany—widely regarded as a metal stronghold—yet soon recognized that its ambitious arrangements could not be conveyed live with only one keyboardist. Multi-tracking was rejected because preserving the authenticity of the live performance remained paramount. Julius Chmielewski therefore joined as second keyboardist in 1997, followed shortly by guitarist Devor Tepic. Now seven members strong, Embraced recorded its debut album, Amorous Anathema, released by Regain in April 1998. Lindberg exited at that point and was replaced by Andres Albin, whose stay lasted only four months before Thomas Lejon assumed the drum chair. With the lineup settled, the band tracked its follow-up, Within, issued in November 2000. Disagreements over artistic direction and diverging personal tastes soon dissolved the group. Within appeared posthumously in Japan, augmented by a cover of Alphaville’s “Big In Japan” and the original track “Book of Keys.” Michael Håkansson later performed with Evergrey and the Forsaken, Kalle Johansson founded the hard rock band Burning Engines, and Lejon joined the Swedish prog-metal band Andromeda.
