Biography
Empirical ranks among Britain's foremost jazz ensembles, distinguished by their incisive and harmonically layered post-bop sensibility. Their Courtney Pine-produced debut, Empirical, arrived in 2007 to widespread recognition. Subsequent releases sustained that momentum, among them 2013's Tabula Rasa with the Benyounes String Quartet, 2016's Connection, and the 2019 EP Distraction Tactics. The full-length Wonder Is the Beginning surfaced in 2024.
The musicians first assembled in 2007 as students at London's Trinity College of Music. Canadian-born trumpeter Jay Phelps, pianist Kit Downes, alto saxophonist Nathaniel Facey, bassist Neil Charles, and drummer Shaney Forbes comprised the original lineup. They claimed the EBU European Jazz Award in Rotterdam that year and issued their self-titled debut. Saxophonist Courtney Pine supplied production and additional musical input, generating extensive press coverage that fueled intensive touring throughout the U.K. and Europe.
Phelps, Downes, and Charles exited in 2009 to pursue solo endeavors. Empirical countered with their second album, Out 'n' In, which paired remaining members Facey and Forbes with bassist Tom Farmer and saxophonist Julian Seigel. Britain's Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Ensemble followed the record's release.
Elements of Truth in 2011 confirmed the core configuration of saxophonist Facey, drummer Forbes, and bassist Farmer through the addition of vibraphonist Lewis Wright. The same lineup delivered Tabula Rasa in 2011, featuring collaborations with the Benyounes String Quartet. Connection appeared in 2016 and drew further online notice via daily "pop-up" performances at London's Old Street Underground station. The group secured its second Parliamentary Jazz Award that year. After extensive live activity, the EPs Indifference Culture and Distraction Tactics arrived in 2018 and 2019.
Following the pandemic-induced closure of venues and studios, Empirical resumed with shows in England in 2021 and across Europe in 2022. They signed with Michael Janisch's Whirlwind label and returned to the studio in December. Engineer William Purton recorded the sessions alongside guest pianist Jason Rebello and tenor saxophonist Alex Hitchcock. The quartet produced and mixed the material, which vibraphonist Lewis Wright mastered, resulting in Wonder Is the Beginning, issued in March 2024 to commemorate the ensemble's fifteenth anniversary.
