Sam Fogarino established EmptyMansions to serve as an outlet for his own compositions, separate from his roles as Interpol’s drummer and keyboard rig designer plus his earlier partnership with Swervedriver’s Adam Franklin in Magnetic Morning. While composing material on the road during Interpol’s tours between 2009 and 2011, Fogarino drew inspiration from Hubert Selby Jr.’s writing together with the sounds of Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. To realize the recordings he recruited Brandon Curtis—then touring with Interpol after his time in Secret Machines—to play bass and produce for EmptyMansions, and brought in guitarist Duane Denison of the Jesus Lizard and Tomahawk. The resulting debut album, snakes/vultures/sulfate, was tracked from early through mid-2012 and issued by Riot House Records in April 2013.
