Biography
In the closing years of the 1990s, the short-lived German band Encryption sought to fuse death metal's technical aggression with power metal's melodic sensibility and wider commercial appeal. Critical praise, however abundant, could not offset the constraints of their modest independent distribution network. Vocalist Norbert Hartmann, guitarists Christian Klein and Manfred Herzog (later replaced by Stefan Muller), bassist Oliver Göß, and drummer Johannes Klein nevertheless showed clear potential through the 1996 demo "The Cryptogram" and the albums Shrouded in Mystery (1997) and Perishing Black Light (2000), prompting later acts such as Into Eternity and Scar Symmetry to explore similar stylistic blends.
