Biography
The Endellion String Quartet, occasionally referred to simply as the Endellion Quartet, ranks among Britain’s longest-lasting and most admired chamber groups, having built an extensive recorded catalog while performing across numerous nations. Through prolonged teaching appointments, the ensemble has shaped succeeding waves of string players in both Britain and the United States.
Established in 1979 and taking its name from the Cornish village of St. Endellion, the quartet originally comprised violinists Andrew Watkinson and Louise Williams, violist Garfield Jackson, and cellist David Waterman. Its lineup has remained almost unchanged; the sole alteration occurred in 1986 when Ralph de Souza succeeded Williams. A residency at Cambridge University that began in 1991 continues to the present, and the group returns regularly to The Venue Leeds and Balliol College, Oxford. Three brief residencies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an associate position at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and a 2011 appointment as Visiting Quartet in Association with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London further mark its institutional affiliations. Recognition arrived in 1996 with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Best Chamber Ensemble Award, after which the quartet expanded its international schedule to include appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
The ensemble entered the recording studio in 1990 with a Virgin Classics release of Mozart string quartets. Subsequent projects appeared on the CRD label and, with growing frequency, on Warner Classics, which issued the group’s complete Beethoven quartet cycle. In 2020 several members joined forces with players from the Dante Quartet to record the string quintets of Charles Villiers Stanford for the Somm label.
