Biography
The instrumental duo Endless Field, built around guitar and bass, crafts atmospheric jazz and folk pieces distinguished by ambient harmonics alongside textured improvisation. Their first recording arrived with the self-titled Endless Field in 2017.
The project came together near 2016 in New York City, pairing guitarist Jesse Lewis with bassist Ike Sturm. Lewis, a Boston native, absorbed a blend of rock and jazz influences while growing up and first refined his technique at the University of New Orleans with Steve Mazakowski. After completing studies at the Manhattan School of Music, he has collaborated with numerous artists such as Chris Potter, Ellis Marsalis, Anat Cohen, and Dave Douglas. Sturm, originally from Wisconsin, completed both his undergraduate and graduate training at the Eastman School of Music, where he worked with renowned bassist Dave Holland, and has since appeared alongside forward-thinking musicians including Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider, and Bobby McFerrin. The two longtime associates had already shared stages across multiple ensembles for more than ten years before establishing the duo. Their 2017 debut, Endless Field, included contributions from guests Donny McCaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Fabian Almazan, and additional players. In 2020 they issued the live field recording Alive in the Wilderness, captured across various outdoor sites in Southern Utah.
