Biography
The Ennis Sisters emerged as a folk ensemble rooted in Irish traditions, featuring three Newfoundland-born siblings: Maureen, Karen, and Teresa, ordered from eldest to youngest. Each sister contributes both vocal and instrumental talents. Maureen handles guitar duties while also crafting original material. Karen performs on tin whistle and flute while incorporating step dancing into the act. Teresa supplies bodhran rhythms and likewise engages in step dancing. Before reaching their early twenties the trio had already issued multiple recordings, produced a holiday television special, secured a contract with a major label, and collected an array of honors.
Raised on the traditional Irish repertoire that shaped their childhood in Newfoundland, the sisters first sang and played for relatives and acquaintances before securing pub engagements in their home region. Subsequent festival appearances and tours expanded their audience through successive high-energy shows. Their debut recording, Red Is the Rose, arrived in 1997 and captured the MIA Folk Album of the Year Award, drawing widespread industry attention. The following year brought additional recognition in the form of Female Artists of the Year and Group of the Year honors. Christmas on Ennis Road surfaced in 1998, offering seasonal fare that led to a CBC Christmas Special and thereby introduced the group to a broader viewership.
With the arrival of the new millennium the sisters issued their third album, titled Ennis Sisters 3, which earned yet another Album of the Year accolade. Warner Music Canada soon added them to its roster, initiating work on a subsequent project. Among the songs featured across their releases are “Lord of the Dance,” “Rainy Days,” “If Anything Happened to You,” “When Tomorrow Comes,” “Can't Stop the Dance,” “Never Puts His Fiddle Down,” and “Forever Love.”
