Biography
Epiphany Project brings together pianist and composer John Hodian with singer and lyricist Bet Williams. Philadelphia served as both birthplace and childhood home for Hodian, who took up the piano at age eleven. He earned a master’s degree in music composition from the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts and later pursued private lessons with Max Rudolf. Both jazz and classical ensembles featured his performances, and he later joined the faculty of his former school. He subsequently launched Digital Sound studio, where he turned to composing for film and television. An Emmy recognized his work on a documentary devoted to sculptress Toshiko Takeazu. Among his screen scores are Frank Capra’s American Dream, Jag, Blades, and Girl School Mystery. He also issued the solo recording Available Forms.
West Point marks the birthplace of Williams, whose father served as a military officer. Army postings worldwide shaped her upbringing, including extended time in Germany and high school years in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her mother, a music instructor, presented her with an acoustic guitar during eighth grade, prompting an immediate start to songwriting. At Penn State University she began as a music major yet completed a B.A. in English Composition. Once her studies ended she pursued music professionally, releasing the albums Elephants and Angels, Building a Bed, Live at the Northstar, The Kitchen Door, Ooh La La, and Rose Tattoo.
The pair first crossed paths in 1992 and soon began working together on an occasional basis. Their initial Epiphany Project album, Document, appeared in 1994, followed by a self-titled collection in 2001.
