Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Eric Lichter launched his solo work with the 2002 album Palm Wine Sunday Blue, yet his recording activity stretched back nearly twenty years earlier. Based in Seattle, Lichter made his first appearance on disc as drummer for the Life, a minor neo-psychedelic outfit active from the mid- to late ’80s that issued the 1987 album Alone and the 1990 single “Do It Again”/“Broken Man” on the local Green Monkey Records imprint before disbanding in the early ’90s. When the Life’s erstwhile labelmates the Green Pajamas regrouped in 1993 following their own 1989 dissolution, Lichter stepped in on keyboards and second guitar, filling the spot left by original member Steve Lawrence. Following four years of scattered compilation tracks and intermittent singles, the Green Pajamas issued their first complete album in more than seven years, 1997’s Strung Behind the Sun; Lichter supplied three songs to that record, a contribution he matched on the subsequent releases All Clues Lead to Megan’s Bed (1998), Seven Fathoms Down and Falling (2000), and The Caroler’s Song (2001). Recorded alone over several years, with sporadic assistance from fellow Green Pajamas members Jeff Kelly and Laura Weller among others, his solo debut Palm Wine Sunday Blue finally appeared in May 2002.
