Biography
During the Bristol, Tennessee sessions supervised by Ralph Peer, Ernest Phipps and His Holiness Singers performed alongside the first recordings of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and the Stoneman Family. Coming from an Anglo-American church in Kentucky, the ensemble cut several sides for Bluebird in the late '20s. Harry Smith's 1952 folksong compendium Anthology of American Folk Music contained their "Shine on Me," which also surfaced on the Country Music Foundation compilation The Bristol Sessions.
