Biography
Ernie Haase possessed a resonant tenor voice ideal for both leading vocals and contributing to layered harmonies, earning recognition as part of the Cathedrals during the 1990s ahead of establishing the quartet Ernie Haase & Signature Sound in 2003. Drawing from classic Southern gospel ensembles such as the Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers while refreshing the approach for present-day listeners, the group entered the Billboard Christian Top Ten via their self-titled debut in 2005 and claimed the number-one position two years later with their third album, Get Away, Jordan. The 2008 release Dream On received a Grammy nomination for Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album. Through various personnel shifts over time, later projects encompassed homages to the Cathedrals with A Tribute to the Cathedral Quartet in 2010 and Broadway material via The Inspiration of Broadway in 2015.
Born in December 1964 in Cynthiana, Indiana, vocalist Ernie Haase spent his formative years in Newburgh, Indiana, completing studies at Castle High School and then attending Oakland City College with a basketball scholarship. During that period he performed with the gospel ensemble the Noblemen and progressed through additional acts including Earthlight and the DMB Band, known as the Dixie Melody Boys, prior to joining Redeemed in 1986. Haase entered the renowned Cathedrals in 1990, contributing to more than a dozen albums until the ensemble concluded its performances in 1999.
Haase pursued solo work, issuing What a Difference a Day Makes in 1999 followed by Never Alone in 2000. Preliminary iterations of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound surfaced on Stand by Me in 2003 and Great Love in 2004 under the name Signature Sound Quartet, before the configuration of Haase on tenor, Ryan Seaton on lead, Doug Anderson on baritone, and Tim Duncan on bass united with pianist Roy Webb for the 2005 album Ernie Haase & Signature Sound. Distributed through Gaither Music Group, the recording peaked at number six on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and number 59 on the Billboard 200. Subsequent efforts comprised the seasonal Christmas with Ernie Haase & Signature Sound in 2006, after which Get Away, Jordan ascended to Christian number one in early 2007. The Top Five was attained again that year with Together, a joint project alongside the Gaither Vocal Band. Remaining with Gaither Music Group and retaining the same four vocalists from the debut, Dream On from 2008 earned a Grammy nomination for Best Southern/Country/Bluegrass Gospel Album in 2010 while also reaching the Christian albums chart's Top Five. A Tribute to the Cathedral Quartet, released in late 2010, attained the number-three position.
Here We Go Again appeared in 2012 as the ensemble's initial outing on the Stowtown Records imprint, established through a partnership between Haase and producer Wayne Haun. The Glorious Day LP and the video Christmas Live! followed in 2013, with Gaither Music Group then presenting the concert recording Oh, What a Savior in 2014. Ernie Haase & Signature Sound returned to Stowtown for Happy People and The Inspiration of Broadway in 2015, the latter drawing from classic stage productions such as Showboat, Carousel, and Les Misérables. With the roster now consisting of Haase, Devin McGlamery on lead, Dustin Dyke on baritone, Paul Harkey on bass, and pianist Tyler Vestal, The Favorite Hymns of Fanny Crosby emerged in 2016. Clear Skies arrived in 2018, incorporating appearances by the Booth Brothers and Voices of Lee, while the seasonal A Jazzy Little Christmas was issued in 2019.
