Biography
Gerard Hanson operates under the ERP alias—distinct from his work as Convextion—to deliver rich, melodic electro-techno shaped by the legacies of Model 500 and Drexciya. This understated artist from Texas placed his earliest ERP material on Sean Deason’s Detroit-based Matrix Records in 1996, the same imprint that had hosted his Convextion debut in a more dub-oriented vein the previous year. What appeared to be a solitary venture resurfaced in 2005 when Hanson revived the project locally via Down Low Music for a self-titled EP. Roughly a dozen additional 12-inch releases emerged through the mid-2010s on labels including Ai in England, Frustrated Funk in the Netherlands, and Semantica in Spain, the last of which issued the three-part Evoked Potentials series. During those years he also contributed substantially to a pair of Hardfloor recordings. The atmospheric, circuitous routes he explored within the ERP catalog proved equally suited to longer formats, prompting the 2018 appearance of his debut double-pack Afterimage on the Forgotten Future imprint he runs. A somewhat darker and more driving successor, Exomoon, followed the next year. After issuing a 2023 EP on Germany’s om:nia, Hanson aligned ERP with Madrid’s Apnea label and unveiled Faded Caprice, envisioned as a soundtrack for a late-summer night drive, in 2024.
