Biography
Formed in London by vocalist Maria Cecilia Tedemalm, synth player Flora Watters, bassist Katy Cotterell, and drummer Tamsin Leach, the quartet ES fuses tense post-punk with gloomy, goth-tinged synth punk to produce a sound at once dismal and charged. An early EP appeared soon after the group assembled, after which the members honed their style across later releases, among them the caustic full-length debut Less of Everything in 2020 and the 2023 EP Fantasy.
Their approach stayed minimal yet emotionally raging, borrowing the detached stance common to icy coldwave acts and charging it with punk intensity. The first recordings surfaced as the 2016 EP Object Relations. The band performed frequently in London and joined the Thurston Moore Group for a 2017 tour. While residing in Glasgow, Scotland, ES tracked its initial album. The abrasive, impassioned Less of Everything arrived in April 2020 via Upset the Rhythm. On the subsequent EP Fantasy the quartet folded additional dance-friendly elements into its dark post-punk framework, issuing the four-song set as a limited-edition 7" on the same label.
