Essential Logic

Born Susan Whitby in 1960, Lora Logic had played saxophone for little more than six months when, at fifteen, she joined her friend Marion Elliot—known as Poly Styrene—to help launch X-Ray Spex. She remained long enough to cut the landmark feminist punk single “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!” and arrange saxophone parts for an album’s worth of material before departing abruptly to start Essential Logic in 1978 with guitarist/vocalist Phil Legg, bassist Mark Turner, drummer Rich Tea, and second guitarist William Bennett, later affiliated with Whitehouse. Favoring off-kilter rhythms, abstract horn figures, and ventures into dissonance and atonality over straightforward speed and volume, the band produced some of the most exhilarating and unrestrained music of the early post-punk years. Logic’s raw, kinetic saxophone work was matched by a distinctive vocal approach that blended Patti Smith’s understated eroticism with Yoko Ono’s unbound freedom. After issuing several singles and the 1979 album Beat Rhythm News, Essential Logic disbanded while recording a second LP; Logic finished the project herself and released it in 1982 as the solo album Pedigree Charm. She also contributed to sessions by the Raincoats, Swell Maps, the Red Krayola, and others before withdrawing from music for a period to join a London-based Hare Krishna sect with Poly Styrene during part of the 1980s. By the mid-1990s she had resumed writing and recording on her own and made a brief return to a re-formed X-Ray Spex in 1995. In the early 2000s, renewed interest in post-punk prompted Essential Logic to reactivate for a four-song self-titled EP in 2001; a second EP of new material followed the next year. Kill Rock Stars marked the occasion in 2003 with Fanfare in the Garden, a two-disc anthology containing the band’s and Logic’s complete recorded output plus numerous unreleased 1990s tracks. Nearly twenty years elapsed before the group returned with Land of Kali in 2022—their first studio album in the forty-three years since Beat Rhythm News—co-produced by Youth Martin.
