Beginning in the mid-'90s, Estéfano stood at the forefront of Latin music as its leading hitmaking songwriter and producer. He collected numerous awards, revived the trajectories of faded performers, delivered a steady stream of chart-topping successes across multiple careers, and stepped forward as a solo artist in 2005, long after his reputation as a Latin pop songwriting genius had solidified. Born Fabio Alonso Salgado in Cali, Colombia, he relocated to the United States in 1989 with ambitions to establish himself as a songwriter. His initial publishing agreement arrived in 1992 via a contract with the Miami-based Foreign Imported Productions, the company owned by Emilio Estefan, Jr. That same year marked his first songwriting credits on Jon Secada's Otro Dia Mas sin Verte, specifically the number one singles "Cree en Nuestro Amor" and "Sentir." The following year he contributed the majority of tracks to Gloria Estefan's chart-topping Mi Tierra, among them the title track and "Mi Buen Amor," both of which reached number one.

After achieving rapid early success, Estéfano joined Cuban singer/songwriter Donato Póveda to release a pair of albums and several hits on Sony Discos under the name Donato & Estéfano. The partnership dissolved shortly afterward, prompting Estéfano to resume his songwriting and production work. He began by assisting Chayanne, who had not issued an original album for several years, resulting in multiple hits including "Dejaría Todo," Chayanne's first number one single in more than six years; Estéfano would supply additional chart-toppers for the artist in subsequent projects. Paulina Rubio and Thalía likewise gained from his contributions during this period, with their respective albums Paulina (2000) and Thalia (2001) packed with successful tracks. He maintained this pattern of consistent hitmaking for numerous Latin pop acts in the years that followed.

By 2005, having earned BMI's Latin Songwriter of the Year honor seven times along with 39 Top 40 entries, 22 Top Ten placements, and seven number one hits, Estéfano issued his solo debut Código Personal: A Media Vida. The ten-song set consisted of deeply personal material he had composed specifically for his own performance. His emergence and reception as a solo performer affirmed his standing as Latin music's foremost songwriter and producer of the prior decade.
