Originating as Johan Angergård’s lone endeavor, the somber electronic pop sound of Eternal Death marked a sharp departure for the Swedish musician, producer, and Labrador Records founder previously recognized through his contributions to Club 8, the Legends, and Acid House Kings. Those earlier groups had cultivated a bright, melodic style, yet this new venture steered toward denser, more ominous territory. Once initial tracks were underway, Angergård chose to step back from vocal duties and visual presence, prompting a search for a frontperson. He settled on vocalist Elin Berlin, and the pair began collaborating. Their introductory visual statement consisted solely of the phrase “Eternal Death” against a blank frame accompanied by no sound, after which the first proper track, “Head,” surfaced on Labrador in early 2014. Three additional singles—“Bullet,” “Fade,” and “Cry”—followed throughout the remainder of that year, succeeded by “Violence” in early 2015. Later that same year the self-titled debut album collected every release the duo had issued up to that point.
