Ethelbert Nevin

Born in America, Nevin received piano instruction from Lang and pursued compositional studies with Emery. Journeys across Europe prompted an unsuccessful bid to study with Richard Strauss. He created numerous concise piano works and vocal songs whose prevailing mood remained gentle and luminous, though moments of introspection appeared. Early in her career Isadora Duncan performed three selections from his “Water Scenes,” retaining them in her programs long after she achieved worldwide recognition.
