Although headquartered in Cleveland, the ensemble draws upon an unmistakably global makeup. Robert Cherry and Switzerland-native David Mooser first joined forces and played shows throughout the Cleveland area before recruiting drummer Mark Klein. EtherNet issued its debut single, Ione Skye, in 1994; a promotional EP and the Cyan EP soon followed. A split 7" vinyl single with Cobra Verde presented each band covering material by Echo & the Bunnymen and the Teardrop Explodes. The group’s first full-length album, Severance, arrived in 1996 and attracted notice for its pronounced David Bowie overtones. EtherNet maintained an active touring schedule while collecting coverage in both local and national alternative music magazines. The Requisite Chemicals appeared on Requisite Recordings in 2000 and was commended for its resemblance to early-’70s bands such as Big Star and Badfinger. Mark Klein exited at that point, yielding the drum chair to Brian Gemmill, one-time member of the New Zealand industrial band Lung. The group then landed a prized North American support slot with Idlewild and Placebo. Keyboardist Ken Leonard was added to the lineup for the 2002 release More Strange Bruises.
