Biography
Lafayette, California, USA served as the initial home base for The Ethix. The group’s 1965 roster featured Ken Metcalf, Bill Gerst, Gil Sanchez, Sandy Clifford, Wayne Ceballos and Cork Marchesi as leader. Their opening single, ‘Skopul’/‘It’s Time’, drew from R&B sources and offered little sign of the stylistic turn that surfaced on the next release, ‘Bad Trip’/‘Skins’. While its B-side recalls the early Mothers Of Invention, ‘Bad Trip’ diverges sharply from other 1967 recordings through screaming vocals, erratic distorted guitars, and a bedrock of steady bass and percussion. Marchesi soon dropped the Ethix name to launch the similarly unsettling Fifty Foot Hose.
