His training occurred at the Paris Conservatoire, where premiers prix in violin, conducting, and composition were awarded to him. Légende de Roukmani earned him the Prix de Rome during 1934. Between 1939 and 1948 he directed performances at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, then accepted the post of director at the Ecole Nationale de Musique in Valenciennes in 1951. A substantial body of chamber music for winds forms the basis of his renown, works whose elegant structure and fluent melodies align with the traits of twentieth-century French chamber music.
