Biography
Working alongside the poet and composer Elomar, the Bahian performer Eugenio Avelino—recording under the name Xangai—may have fashioned Brazil’s most literate body of songs. Born in the northeastern state of Bahia, Avelino passed many years tending cattle before turning to music. Critics have characterized his singing as nasal and harsh.
