Eureka California, the Athens, Georgia-based duo, draw from the '90s slacker rock aesthetic of Pavement and Butterglory while incorporating the churning guitars associated with the Wedding Present around the time of Seamonsters, all infused with a substantial helping of melodic post-millennial angst. Jake Ward, serving as vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, joined forces with drummer Marie A. Uhler in the early 2010s, aided by bassist Charles Walker, to establish the project. Their initial release came in spring 2011 with the single "Modern Times" on the local Happy Happy Birthday to Me label, followed by a contribution of the track "There's No Looking Back" to a Wuxtry record store compilation issued around that period. HHBTM put out the group's buoyant first full-length, Big Cats Can Swim, in 2012, after which Walker departed, leaving the pair to deliver their similarly upbeat second album, Crunch, on the same imprint two years later. For their third release in as many years, Ward and Uhler journeyed to England to collaborate with Matthew "MJ" Johnson of Hookworms at Suburban Home Studios, yielding Versus—their most forceful recording yet, driven by overloaded guitars and prominently insistent vocals. A 2017 single titled "Wigwam" preceded another trip to England for further work with Johnson, resulting in 2018's Roadrunners on HHBTM, which again featured Ward's blown-out guitars alongside Uhler's consistently potent rhythmic approach.
