Biography
Evelyn Rubio performs as a vocalist and saxophonist while releasing charting recordings that fuse timeless and contemporary soul with jump blues and swing, voiced in English and Spanish and shaped by an updated pop-soul perspective. Born and raised in Mexico City, she entered show business at nine when she secured a part in the television series My Little Stars. By fifteen she was leading rock and blues groups across Mexico City, and at nineteen she took up saxophone study while beginning to compose original material. Her first album, Evelyn Automarginados, appeared in 1999. She also served as vocalist for the black-tie orchestra Chivo Azul, remaining with the ensemble for five years.
In 2004 she portrayed Mary Magdalene in a Canadian staging of Jesus Christ Superstar. The following year she relocated to Houston, Texas. There she encountered Calvin Owens and soon signed a multi-year agreement to serve as lead vocalist and saxophone soloist for Calvin Owens & His Blues Orchestra. She contributed vocals to his Es un Amor Legendario album while he produced her second solo effort, La Mujer Que Canta Blues, issued in 2007 and featuring his orchestra. Alongside ongoing tour commitments, she launched work on a new project with Owens, yet after his passing she carried the sessions forward with Andy Bradley as co-producer. Rubio subsequently joined James "Boogaloo" Bolden's Blues Band. He enlisted her for the summer festival circuit, and the collaboration proved so successful that the pair captured the 2013 album No News Jus' the Blues.
While fulfilling dates with Bolden, she pressed on with her third album alongside Bradley and the Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra. The sessions wrapped in late 2014. Released under the title Hombres and credited in English to Evelyn Rubio and the Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra, the bilingual collection reached the public in May 2015. Blending jazz with pop, rock, blues, and Latin grooves, the recording quickly gained favor among radio DJs on both sides of the Mexican border. A Spanish-language edition followed in March 2016, simultaneously reaching number one on the Latin Pop Albums chart, number three on the Top Latin Albums chart, and number six on the Blues Albums chart.
