In 1991 vocalist Colleen Fitzpatrick and guitarist Michael Kotch founded Eve's Plum after crossing paths as students at NYU. Michael’s identical twin Ben took the drum chair, and Theo Mack completed the lineup on bass once an assortment of players had cycled through the role. Sony signed the band after barely a year of East Coast gigs and issued the debut album envy in 1993. Between 1993 and 1994 Eve’s Plum demonstrated its driving live show on bills with Dig and Tripping Daisy; the group also cut the single “Eye” for the Higher Learning soundtrack. September 1995 brought the second album Cherry Alive. Although further recordings were underway, the members parted ways after 1997, freeing Fitzpatrick to launch a solo career under the name Vitamin C.
