Ex Eye

EX EYE came together in 2016 as an experimental post-metal quartet initiated by saxophonist Colin Stetson, joined by drummer Greg Fox of Liturgy, synthesist Shahzad Ismaily whose past work includes Secret Chiefs 3 and Ceramic Dog, and guitarist Toby Summerfield linked to Never Enough Hope, Crush Kill Destroy, and Larval. Sessions for Stetson’s Sorrow: A Reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony, which featured both Ismaily and Fox, directly led to the group’s formation. Summerfield and Stetson had already shared years of friendship and collaboration that originated in high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Festival dates arrived almost at once after the band assembled, among them Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal, CTM Festival in Germany, and Eaux Claires Fest in the U.S. Their growing live reputation together with forceful studio demos secured a contract with Relapse Records. The self-titled debut album was tracked live at Ismaily’s Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, New York and appeared in June 2017 just as EX EYE began its summer tour.
