Biography
Formed by Canadian keyboardists Gerald O'Brien and Steve Sexton, Exchange specialized in atmospheric soundscapes. Rock and pop sessions preceded O'Brien's composition of the score for the soap opera Generations. Sexton supplied backing for numerous vocalists, notably Dionne Warwick, Rita Coolidge, Dusty Springfield, and especially Anne Murray. The pair first crossed paths in the rock group Surrender, stayed in contact afterward, and launched Exchange in 1986 under the provisional name So Ho until another ensemble claimed the identical title. Operating exclusively as a studio unit whose layered sound depended on extensive overdubbing, the project delivered several Mesa albums spanning the late '80s and early '90s: Into the Night (1988), Between Places (1990), the TV soundtrack The Legend of Prince Valiant (1991), and the self-titled Exchange (1992), all situated in the progressive instrumental style that borders new age.
