Biography
The emergence of the riot-grrrl movement, fronted by Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Heavens to Betsy, motivated singers and guitarists Carrie Brownstein and Becca Albee to unite with drummer CJ Phillips in forming the Olympia, WA-based Excuse 17 in 1993. A string of compilation tracks came first, setting the stage for the trio’s 1995 Kill Rock Stars debut Such Friends Are Dangerous. Later that year Chainsaw released their self-titled album. After issuing a split single with Lync, Excuse 17 disbanded. Becca Albee subsequently appeared in Motel No-Tell, while Carrie Brownstein attained wider recognition as a member of Sleater-Kinney.
