Guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Geoff Farina first earned recognition through Karate, the group he led from 1993 until 2005 and whose distinctive blend of emo rock structures with jazzy guitar lines won a wide following. Hearing damage incurred after years of high-volume shows prompted him to disband the project, after which he shifted toward acoustic performance both solo and alongside Glorytellers as well as in a duo with longtime associate Chris Brokaw. Early 2013 saw Farina launch Exit Verse, an electric guitar–driven rock outfit that reunited him with drummer Chris Dye and bassist Pete Croke; the Chicago-based trio rehearsed locally and laid down basic tracks for a nine-song self-titled album. Farina then headed to Boston to secure additional vocals from Thalia Zedek. Issued in late 2014, the record fused the dynamic tension of his Karate era with the looser feel of classic rock and punk acts such as Thin Lizzy and the Clash. Dye departed once tracking concluded, leaving drummer John Dugan to join for the band’s initial tours. Fronted by the single “Sleeping in Graceland,” Exit Verse’s second album, Grant No Glory, appeared in November 2016.
