Biography
Explore Ensemble concentrates its programming on twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire. The London-based collective, established in 2012 by composers Nicholas Moroz and Arne Gieshoff, has delivered numerous world and British premieres while mounting recitals devoted to individual leading contemporary figures.
All performers are Royal College of Music graduates united by a commitment to new music. Its central instrumentation comprises a sextet—flutist Taylor MacLennan, clarinetist Alex Roberts, pianists Sarah Park and Siwan Rhys, violinist David Lopez, violist Morag Robertson, and cellist Deni Teo—occasionally augmented by artistic director Moroz on electronics. Early attention from programmers led to appearances at the Cambridge Music Festival, No Bounds, November Music in the Netherlands, and multiple editions of the Huddersfield Music Festival, alongside engagements at Wigmore Hall and Kings Place in London. University series at the Royal Northern College of Music, the University of Leeds, Oxford University, and City University of London have also hosted the group, which has additionally been broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Single-composer programs have featured Morton Feldman, Michael Finnissy, Kaija Saariaho, and Luigi Nono. More than a dozen world premieres have been given to works by Edwin Hillier, Lisa Illean, and Oliver Christophe Leith, together with many British premieres. The Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung Ensemble Prize was awarded for the 2021–2022 season. The debut recording, James Weeks: Summer, was released in 2021 and followed the same year by Oliver Leith: Me Hollywood; the third album, Perfect Offering, appeared on Huddersfield Contemporary Records in 2023.
