Eye To Eye came together as a duo in 1979 when keyboardist Julian Marshall, previously a member of Marshall-Hain, encountered dancer and singer Deborah Berg during an improvisational dance performance in San Diego. Shortly afterward Berg traveled to London, and the pair began composing material together at Marshall’s residence. They soon secured a contract with Automatic Records in the U.K. and issued the single “Am I Normal.”

The self-titled debut album appeared on Warner Bros. Records in 1982. Produced by Gary Katz—best known for his work on Steely Dan’s recordings—the album contained the Top 40 hit “Nice Girl” as well as the follow-up single Shakespeare Stole My Baby. Eye To Eye delivered the same brand of catchy, intelligent pop that Steely Dan had popularized, distinguished by first-rate musicianship and meticulous production values. After the second album, insufficient backing from the label ended the duo’s recording career. The company also declined to issue either of the two well-regarded albums on compact disc in the United States.
