John Bryden records under the moniker Eyes of Others, blending an eclectic array of alternative dance sounds with a homemade production approach and notes of dry wit alongside playful touches. His initial long-player, the self-titled Eyes of Others, surfaced in 2023 and balanced immediate hooks with a refusal to soften its edges.

A multi-instrumentalist residing in Edinburgh, Scotland, Bryden logged twenty years across multiple group projects before shifting to solo work after entering his mid-thirties. That move stemmed from recognizing how routine concessions had long overshadowed fresh ideas in his earlier output. The resulting liberty prompted him to fuse elements spanning Krautrock and dub with folk-rock and psychedelic pop. He gradually honed a varied yet predominantly shadowy, rhythm-driven style, launching the Eyes of Others project via the Stimulus EP on the Edinburgh-based Paradise Palms imprint in late 2017. An unsolicited demo submission for a radio slot led to Andrew Weatherall volunteering a remix of the track “I See You in the Shrubs.” Paradise Palms issued a three-track 12-inch the following year containing interpretations by Eyes of Others, Weatherall, and Donald Dust. Around the same period Bryden encountered Heavenly Recordings founder Jeff Barrett at a show, after which he placed “Elephant” with Paradise Palms in 2020 and “Elevenses” with Global Warming Records in 2021 before formally joining the Heavenly roster in 2022.

The label’s first Eyes of Others offering, the October 2022 10-inch EP Bewitched by the Flames, sold out its initial run almost immediately. The full-length debut arrived in May 2023 and, consistent with Bryden’s usual method, drew from mundane sources that ranged from the adverse effects of inexpensive deodorant to an encounter with the famed couch inside Sigmund Freud’s residence and museum.
