Biography
Eyuphuro is a Mozambique-based ensemble featuring Zena Bakar on vocals and Gino Abdul Remane on vocals and guitar, both born in Illa De Mozambique, together with Chico Ventura on guitar, Mario Fernandes on bass, and percussionists Mussa Abdul and Belarmino Godeiros. The group’s name, drawn from the Makau language, translates as whirlwind. Bakar and Remane serve as the principal songwriters for this sextet, and every member currently resides in Nampula. Their material examines facets of personal relationships within present-day Mozambican life, placing romantic and philosophical texts over sharply defined, highly melodic electric guitar lines and empathetic percussion that can turn nearly hypnotic. Recorded in Toronto in 1990 with the WOMAD organization, Mama Mosambiki remains the band’s sole release readily obtainable in the Western world.
