Representing Houston's Third Ward, Fat Tony crafts introspective and inventive verses over inventive beats in the vein of André 3000, Murs, and Vince Staples. Anthony Lawson Jude Ifeanyichukwu Obiawunaotu, also known at times as Anthony Jude Obi, is the Nigerian-American MC whose early listening encompassed E-40, Lil' Flip, A Tribe Called Quest, the Ramones, Black Flag, and Bikini Kill. After securing the Houston Press Music Award for Best Underground Hip-Hop in three consecutive years, he issued his first album, RABDARGAB, during 2010. Frequent collaborator Tom Cruz of Supreeme handled production, and the project received a chopped-and-screwed remix edition titled SCREWDARGAB the next year. Guest spots followed on A$AP Rocky's "Get Lit" and Das Racist's "Luv It Mayne," while the latter group contributed a Murs verse to Tony's own debut. In 2012 he joined Cruz again for the Young One Records release Double Dragon. His second full-length arrived twelve months later; composed and tracked inside a single week, Smart Ass Black Boy featured the singles "BKNY" and "Hood Party" alongside Kool A.D. and Despot. Subsequent activity centered on standalone tracks, among them the 2014 double A-side "No More" b/w "Love Me," followed in 2015 by "H-Town to L.A." and the Asher Roth collaboration "Sushi." The three-song EP Look, recorded with P. Morris, surfaced in 2016, and Tony's third album, MacGregor Park, arrived in summer 2017.
