A string of appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand propelled Fabian to instant celebrity during the closing years of the 1950s. His polished looks and tempered brand of rock & roll positioned him among the decade's foremost teen idols, bolstered by material from the celebrated composing partnership of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who supplied the hits "Turn Me Loose," "Hound Dog Man," and "I'm a Man," along with additional tracks. His popularity reached its zenith in 1959 via the million-selling single "Tiger," after which he made a determined effort to transition into film acting. Congressional scrutiny later identified him among the artists who profited from payola practices, delivering a severe setback to an already faltering trajectory; during testimony Fabian disclosed that his recordings had relied on considerable electronic processing to enhance his vocal performance. In the wake of those proceedings he appeared in further motion pictures throughout the 1960s, yet never recaptured the following he had enjoyed at his height.
