Biography
Conductor Fabrizio Maria Carminati maintains a steady presence across Italy’s operatic landscape through both stage appearances and studio work, maintaining an exceptionally broad catalog that centers on but is not limited to Italian pieces.
He initially trained as a pianist under Milan instructor Carlo Pestalozza, the editor of the widely circulated Ricordi printings of Bach’s Inventions, before turning to conducting and continuing his Milan studies with composers Davide Anzaghi and Vittorio Fellegara. His podium debut occurred at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 1992, an association that lasted through 1999; at the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s request he later served on the theater’s board. Between 2000 and 2004 he assumed the artistic directorship of the Donizetti Theater in Bergamo and subsequently occupied the same post at the Arena di Verona Foundation. While holding these administrative roles he continued to accept guest engagements throughout Italy’s principal opera houses. In more recent years his schedule has extended beyond national borders, encompassing the Lyon Opera, the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, and the Kansai Opera in Osaka. His active repertoire exceeds 130 titles, predominantly Italian operas yet also embracing ballet scores such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Adolphe Adam’s Giselle as well as symphonic literature. Summer festivals have likewise become frequent venues; at Germany’s Rossini in Wildbad he directed the rarely staged Moisë et Pharaon—Rossini’s extensive revision of Mosè in Egitto—in 2018.
His recording career began with the 1996 Ricordi anthology Le convenienze e inconvenienze teatrali. Most of his discs have appeared on smaller imprints including Dynamic, Bongiovanni, and Concerto Classics; the 2018 Wildbad account of Moisë et Pharaon was issued by Naxos in 2020.
