Fabulous Four

During the mid-1960s a wave of capable Swedish ensembles copied British and American rock styles, among them the Fabulous Four, who scored four Top Ten hits at home across 1966 and 1967 while attracting no attention outside Sweden. Like numerous other acts from that country, the quartet displayed an almost deliberate absence of personality. Their experiments ranged from watered-down Merseybeat to folk-rock and distorted garage sounds that occasionally recalled the Kinks and the Monkees. Although they composed most of their own songs, their commercial successes came via clumsy renditions of overseas pop numbers such as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "Rhythm of the Rain," which were apparently cut under protest. Listeners need not pursue the group’s catalog unless they harbor a strong appetite for 1960s European rock; measured against that field alone, however, the band did turn out several tolerable tracks.
