Fairbanks came together in Raleigh, North Carolina, during 1999 with Britt Treece on guitar and vocals, Matt Eldredge on bass, and drummer Josh completing the lineup. The three musicians had first crossed paths in high school, where they soon recognized a shared enthusiasm for rock music and moved quickly to start the band. Delivering vigorous blends of hard rock and grunge-derived ideas, the group built a devoted audience throughout the local region and in surrounding areas. After showcasing their commanding stage presence across many concerts, they captured their debut EP, The Long Lost Show, directly from one of those live performances. As their visibility continued to grow, the North Carolina outfit entered the studio in late 2000 to lay down their first album, Improve, which reached stores in 2001.
