Biography
The Fairburn Royals formed in Athens, Georgia, during 2000 while their members were still attending college. Guitarists Matt Lisle and Wesley Black anchored the group with their melodic, pop-oriented songwriting, which shaped the lo-fi indie rock sound heard on the band’s 2001 debut, Sunshine Slowdown, issued by Happy Happy Birthday to Me. A year later they followed with From a Window Way Above, refining the same approach, and they also placed tracks on various compilations. In 2003 the aptly named Free EP appeared as a gratis digital release, featuring new versions of earlier material such as “Secretary’s Day” and “Lonesome Townie Blues.”
Early listeners responded to the Athens quartet’s guitar-driven style, which recalled Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided by Voices, and the Beatles, helping the band win an audience through 2002’s From a Window Way Above and 2004’s The Whistler. After years of nationwide touring, the group disbanded so its members could concentrate on family life and separate endeavors. A decade later the Fairburn Royals reconvened to record fresh material, resulting in the 2018 album ’Til the Sun Disappeared.
