Biography
Fallow Land, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, constructs an elaborate fusion of math pop and post-rock marked by dense layering and shaped through equal measures of analytical rigor and emotional resonance.
Guitarist and vocalist Whit Fineberg, guitarist Evan Veasy, bassist Scott Kendall, and drummer Evan Laybourn form the quartet, with each participant also supplying synths and keyboards. A native of Southeast Michigan, Fineberg moved to Chicago during the early 2010s and soon confronted successive losses that included the death of a close friend along with the dissolution of both a relationship and a prior band. Disoriented and discouraged, he chose to resettle in Ann Arbor, where he linked with adaptable guitarist Veasy to refine new compositions. Kendall and Laybourn then completed the roster, allowing the freshly assembled Fallow Land to begin active operation. With recording assistance from Michigan singer/songwriter Chris Bathgate, the four-piece issued its first EP, Pinscher, on an independent basis in 2017. The following year the band signed with Seattle’s Spartan Records and reentered the studio under the guidance of Matt Bayles (Minus the Bear, Pearl Jam, Isis), yielding the 2019 album Slow Down, Rockstar.
